Glass is one of humanity’s most versatile and enduring materials, offering a combination of utility, beauty, and sustainability. From the windows that let sunlight brighten our homes to the containers that preserve our food and beverages, glass plays an integral role in modern life.
Perhaps the most compelling feature of glass is its recyclability. Glass is 100% recyclable, meaning it can be reused indefinitely without any loss in quality or purity. Glass recycling is a vital part of achieving a circular economy.
Glass is made from natural resources like sand, soda ash, and limestone, and recycling glass helps reduce the demand for these finite materials. It is also a relatively energy-efficient process to recycle glass than to produce glass from scratch, and this process helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Glass that isn’t recycled often ends up in landfills, where it can take thousands of years to break down.
However, despite this potential, global glass recycling rates are currently estimated at only 21% of the glass produced. This is an alarmingly low number. It is time for India to recognize the remarkable resource that glass represents and seize the opportunity for circularity that it offers. With directed action towards glass recycling, India can take significant steps towards achieving a sustainable, circular economy.
Karo Sambhav has partnered with Saint-Gobain since November 2021 to establish one of the first successful and scalable industry-led initiatives to make the float glass value chain truly circular.
Till December 31st 2024, Karo Sambhav has collected around 32,000 metric tonnes of float glass waste for responsible recycling over the years. Its efforts reduced around 96 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions, leading to carbon offset by around 64,000 trees in their lifetime! Karo Sambhav’s initiatives have been the first step towards bringing multiple stakeholders in the glass value chain together with one common goal of recycling more and better.
